How to Spot Scams

Scammers often use tactics that can be identified by:

  • Fake links that direct you outside of Shopee and request sensitive account details such as one-time passwords (OTPs) or account passwords.
  • Poor spelling and grammar are common in scam messages.

What Scammers Might Pressure You to Do

They may ask you to:

  • Share your OTP, account password, or ShopeePay PIN.
  • Provide personal data (e.g., date of birth), which Shopee Customer Service may use for verification.
  • Make payments via ShopeePay to a number they provide.

🚨 Important: Shopee will never ask for your password, PIN, or payment outside of the Shopee platform. Ignore or report such cases immediately.

Shopee will only contact you through official channels:

✅ The Shopee App
✅ Verified social media accounts
✅ Official email addresses ending with @shopee.com.my

How to Protect Yourself from Scams

👍 Do’s & don’ts:

  • Never share personal details such as your OTP, password, or ShopeePay PIN

  • Never scan QR codes, open suspicious links, or download attachments from messages, even if they’re sent within the Shopee App

  • Frequently scan your device for malware

  • Don’t respond to messages that aren’t sent via official channels, such as email, using our @shopee.com domain, or verified social media accounts

  • Don’t trust sellers who direct you to transact outside of Shopee

  • Always look for signs that you’ve landed on a fraudulent website, which include misspelled words and typos

  • Regularly change your passwords, notify your bank of potential fraud, and look out for unexpected charges on your credit card if you’ve entered sensitive information on a fraudulent website

Common scams to watch out for

QR scam 🤳

What is it: In this scam, you’ll be contacted by a ‘Shopee Seller’ privately asking you to make payment for your orders outside of the Shopee app.

How it works: After you place an order, scammers pretending to be Shopee Sellers may message you with a “special promotion price” through Shopee Chat. They will then cancel your order and ask you to place a new one. After that, they’ll contact you outside the Shopee App (usually on WhatsApp) and send a fake ShopeePay QR code with payment instructions. Once you pay using the QR code, the scammer disappears, and your order is never delivered.

How you can avoid it: Never trust offers that require you to pay by QR code or outside the Shopee App. Always make payments only within the app. If any seller asks you to transact outside Shopee, report them to Shopee immediately.

Parcel Scams 📦

What is it: In this scam, you’re asked to make additional payments for delivery due to issues such as parcel weight being exceeded, etc.

How it works: Scammers may message you on the Shopee App claiming there was a mistake in your parcel’s size or weight calculation. They will then ask you to pay extra shipping fees outside the Shopee platform. To make it look real, they might include your name and the item you bought, and promise that the original shipping fee will be refunded within 24 hours after you pay the higher fee. Once you make the payment, the scammer disappears.

How to avoid: Genuine sellers never ask for payments outside Shopee. If you receive such a request or find it suspicious, contact Shopee Customer Service immediately.

Lucky Draw Scam 🎰

What is it: You’re informed you’ve won a prize and are required to share certain personal and financial information to claim the prize.

How it works: Victims are told they won a Shopee contest and to claim the prize, they must provide OTPs, passwords, or card details. The OTP will then be used to authorise credit/debit card transactions on Shopee.

How to avoid: Shopee takes user security and data privacy very seriously. We’d never ask you for your personal information. You should also verify the identity of the person contacting you and monitor transactions on your credit/debit card. All prize announcements come only from official Shopee channels.

Part-time Job Scams 💼

What is it: You may receive text messages from unknown numbers on WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, or other apps claiming you’ve been selected to work with Shopee or offering online jobs to earn extra income. The catch is that you must pay first to get paid.

How it works: These fake part-time online jobs promise easy money by asking you to make purchases at certain shops. At first, scammers offer you small commissions to build trust. Later, as the purchase amounts get bigger, victims stop receiving refunds and lose their money.

Here's a first-hand account from a victim of how this scam works.

How to avoid: Shopee DOESN’T employ any individuals to recruit employees through messaging platforms. Shopee confirms there is no such role as “Online Purchasing Agent.” Shopee will never ask for deposits or advance payments to work with us. All official finance-related activities are done only through the Shopee App or Shopee’s official website.

⚠️ Note:

Beware, as scammers may use spoofed headers to make their messages look like they’re from Shopee

Complete Order Scam 🚨

What is it: Scammers convince you to release payment early so that they can resell the products you purchased.

How it works: Scammers may try to convince you to click “Order Received” before your items arrive. Doing this ends your Shopee Guarantee protection, releases your payment to the scammer, and blocks you from raising a Return/Refund request. In the end, the scammer keeps your money, and you may never get your items.

How to avoid: Don’t trust sellers who try to convince you to select Order Received before you receive your items. Extend Shopee Guarantee if you’ve yet to receive your items or need additional time to check the parcel received. Don’t engage in other types of transactions (other than buying) on Shopee, such as resale transactions.

Impersonation Scam 🕵️

What is it: Scammers pretend to be either official personnel of organisations or Shopee employees to cheat money out of unsuspecting victims.

How it works in different scenarios:

#1 Logistics impersonation: Victims receive calls, emails, or texts from fraudsters posing as Shopee logistics. They ask for personal details (such as full name and bank account) and demand payments for parcel release.

#2 Fake employee survey: Victims receive messages from individuals posing as Shopee employees to participate in a marketing survey and are then offered monetary incentives for completing the survey. Victims who completed the survey would be offered a higher-paying role as a ‘Shopee assistant’.

To start, they must pay for a pre-paid “task package” by transferring money to bank accounts given by scammers. Victims may initially get small returns, but eventually, they cannot withdraw their money and lose everything.

How you can avoid it: Like the part-time job scam, Shopee will never request advance payment or deposits as a requirement to work with or for us. Please stay vigilant and don’t trust unofficial sources claiming to be Shopee.

⚠️ Note:

1. Shopee will never ask for any of your credit/debit card details for verification purposes. If you receive any calls or text messages from someone claiming to be a Shopee customer service agent asking for such details, please don’t disclose your personal information and ignore any calls or messages from that particular number.

2. Shopee and Shopee Mall don’t have any operations in Zambia. Shopee is available in Southeast Asia, Taiwan, and Latin America. You can find the latest list of markets at the bottom of the Shopee homepage via your desktop browser.
